Community health and wellbeing are fundamental to the quality of life on the islands. Research in this area looks at how to improve access to healthcare, promote mental and physical well-being, and foster a sense of belonging. With demographic shifts and the challenges of being a remote community, this research helps to ensure that everyone has the support they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Agriculture, horticulture, and local food are vital for both the island economy and the health of our residents. Research into sustainable farming, flower farming, local food production, and innovative agricultural practices helps ensure food security, supports local businesses and employment, and preserves the islands’ agricultural heritage.

The islands’ heritage and culture are integral to our identity, and research here helps preserve the stories, traditions, and landmarks that define who we are. By valuing and protecting our cultural history, we ensure that future generations can connect to the past while shaping a vibrant cultural future.


Understanding marine ecosystems, fishing practices, and the impacts of human activity on the ocean helps safeguard our natural resources and supports sustainable livelihoods for our island communities. Research in this area helps address challenges such as economic diversification, employment, housing, and infrastructure, while furthering a thriving local economy, as well as preserving the islands' unique landscapes and ecosystems. Understanding the vital role of the sea - through industries like fishing, transport, and tourism - is also essential to ensuring the community's ongoing well-being, prosperity and environmental resilience.
