Transport on St Mary’s: Traffic, Public Transport & Infrastructure – Stuart Moore
How do we move around the island – and how could we do it better?
We’re conducting a study on transport and traffic on St Mary’s, looking at how vehicle use, limited public transport, and infrastructure affect life for residents and visitors. The goal is to better understand daily traffic flows, including freight movement, and how public transport could be improved to reduce congestion and reliance on cars.
We’re particularly focusing on:
-
Car counts on major routes like Telegraph Road, Church Street, and throughout Hugh Town
-
Intra-town vs. inbound/outbound traffic
-
The reliability and usage of local bus services by residents, and why they may not meet current needs
-
The impact of freight delivery schedules and routes
-
Possibilities for better infrastructure: pedestrian zones, seasonal land trains, expanded car share, bike shares and sheds, and more frequent buses
-
How policy tools (like MOT rules or transport incentives) could shape behaviour
We’re keen to hear from anyone who’s interested in this topic – whether you’re a driver, walker, visitor, or just have ideas about how to make getting around St Mary’s better.
