The Isles of Scilly have always thrived on community spirit, resilience, and innovation. From local businesses adapting to island life, to environmental stewardship passed down through generations, the knowledge held by our community is both rich and deeply rooted in place.

Now, through the Isles of Scilly Community Research Network (CRN), we're turning that local expertise into meaningful research—research that starts with you, is led by you, and ultimately benefits the entire community.

Why a Community Research Network?

We understand that when people hear the word "research," it can sometimes feel like something done to a community rather than with it. In the past, research on the islands may have felt disconnected—something that came and went with little local involvement, and even less impact.

We're here to change that.

The CRN is built on a simple but powerful idea: those who live here know best. Whether you’re a small business owner, a teacher, a parent, a fisherman, a young person, or a long-time resident—you hold knowledge and insight that can lead to meaningful change.

What Makes This Different?

This isn’t just research for research’s sake. It’s about creating practical, positive outcomes by building on the community’s strengths and ideas.

Here’s how we’re doing it:

  • Community-Driven and Controlled

At every stage, local people are in the lead. That means research projects are born from the real questions, challenges, and hopes of our community—not outside agendas. The CRN supports islanders in developing their ideas into research projects that have relevance and value right here, right now.

  • Hands-On Support

Got an idea but unsure where to start? That’s what we’re here for. The CRN team helps you navigate the process—from background research to designing questions and gathering information. We even work with the local school to involve the next generation in meaningful, place-based learning.

  • Locally Led, Locally Delivered

Every member of our delivery team lives on the Isles of Scilly. We’re your neighbours, colleagues, and friends—and we’re passionate about making research work for our community. This local leadership means we’re not just ticking boxes; we’re deeply committed to seeing projects through and making sure they deliver real results.

  • Transparency and Accountability

We believe research should be open, clear, and shared. When a project is completed, we make sure the findings are reported back to the community in useful, accessible ways—and most importantly, that they lead to action.

So, What’s Your Idea?

We want to hear from you.

•           Do you have an idea to improve your business or support others on the islands?

•           Are you curious about how we can make island life more sustainable?

•           Do you want to explore ways to better care for our environment, heritage, or community wellbeing?

No idea is too big or too small. If it matters to you, it matters to us.

Whether you’re ready to start a project or just want to share a thought, we’re here to listen and support you. This is about creating a better future for the Isles of Scilly—together.
